**UPDATE March 2016**
The forum turned out to be a bit of a failed experiment (I like to think this is because the Facebook page and comments across the site provide all we really need in the way of a forum).  I’ll leave these pages here for a while longer, because some cool people have posted some good information below.  And if you’d like to be the one to resurrect the forum, everything still works — have at it!

What does everyone wear on their feet to hike?

I have a pair of these and I love them. My feet have never hurt after hiking.

I wear Solomons that I LOVE. They are low, light, and have a pull cord instead of laces. I bought them to do some rain forest hiking in Panama and have been rocking them ever since. Looking to buy a second pair soon!

I wear Solomons as well. I usually buy them on discount from Steep and Cheap. My husband swears by his Hokas, which he got for trail running, but often wears on hikes too.

Thanks for the Steep and Cheap recommendation, @pudgy_groundhog – hadn’t seen that site before, looks cool.  I’ve been a Merrell person for the last several pairs (have also enjoyed the same pair you use, @justherb), but maybe I’ll try some Solomons one of these days.

I replaced my Merrells with a pair of Salomon X Ultra Mid GTX’s.…..hoes-mens/

They do a lot well. As comfortable as my Merrells were, these are even more comfortable and they feel lighter. They are more waterproof than my old Merrells. They are Gortex lined (which can make your feet sweaty in the heat). But the one negative is their wet weather traction. Unlike Merrell, which uses Vibram soles, Salomon uses Contagrip soles. The Contagrip soles utilize a harder compound so they will last longer. Their dry grip is very good. However, on wet rocks I find them much too slippery for my liking. I have about 130 miles on them and I am going to keep wearing them to see of they improve. But if they don’t, it will probably be my last pair of Salomons. It’s a shame too, because I love everything else about them.
